Cloverfield Commentary

I just got back from seeing Cloverfield. Do you guys remember how pissed off I was a few months back that JJ Abrams had me wanting to see this movie without actually knowing anything about it. I hadn’t read any of the critics or threads on IMDb. I just wanted to experience it with virgin eyes.

I wish I could coherently express how unbelievably amazing this movie was…and on how many different levels it captivated me. Unfortunately, all I can really manage at the moment is a whole lot of: “fuck”; “OMG”; and “That was…that was just…that was…”.

One thing I can say with complete and utter certainty: You all are required to see this movie.*

I will write more about it, but for right now, all I can say is this is the first time—that I can ever remember anyways—that I was so completely terrified of actually being killed while in the theatre. I literally had a moment of insanely scrambling up my chair until both my feet were off the floor. And, least you think that BFKP was the only one finding humor in my fear, the theatre was so packed that I was sitting on the section of seats ON THE FLOOR. Oh, and I definitely wacked the guy next to me (that I did not know) with both my knee and elbow while I was climbing my seat like a cracked up spider monkey. And he was so freaked out (by the movie, not by my craziness—just so we’re clear), that he didn’t even care!

You people know me…you know I love movies. You know that I can wax poetic on movies for pages and pages. I’ve said that Juno was amazing…and it was possibly the best movie I’ve seen in the last year or so.

Cloverfield is quite possibly the best movie I’ve ever seen; ever.

It’s not that the story is so grandiose or completely original in its screenplay. Even the special effects and CGI are not a whole lot more than par for the course. The framework and execution of the story, however; created the most viscerally unsettling atmosphere I’ve ever experienced.
And maybe that’s what is making this one bounce around so powerfully in my being. I didn’t just go see Cloverfield. I EXPERIENCED Cloverfield. I felt it, I was there, living it. Every second, every frame, I was there fighting for my life along with all the rest.

More of an actual blog when I can pull my thoughts together… (And, just so I don’t forget, RIP Brad Renfro.)

*Editor’s note: Any of you that have motion camera issues (read: if you were one of the one’s throwing up during The Blaire Witch Project) I will allow you to NOT see this film. Otherwise, no excuses.

Quote of the Moment: “It’s the development of a new life stage between adolescence and adulthood. It’s a temporary condition of being self-focused, not a permanent generational characteristic.”
Soundtrack of the Moment: Jordin Sparks, “Tattoo”
TV/Movie Quote: Cloverfield:
Lily: Oh my God! What was that?!
Hud: Something else—also terrible.
